PEMBA ISLAND
Pemba Island, which is part of the Zanzibar Archipelago lies 30 miles east of mainland Tanzania, across the famous Pemba Channel and together with Zanzibar and Mafia Island (south of Zanzibar) form the famous “Spice Islands” off East Africa’s “Swahili Coast” in the Indian Ocean.
Fishing Tanzania, Pemba Island and the famous Pemba Channel can only be described as spectacular! Besides the stunning beauty of Pemba Island itself, its surrounding smaller islands, deep drop offs and reefs provide for some fantastic Big Game Deep Sea Fishing opportunities!
The coastline of mainland Pemba drops steeply into the Indian Ocean, with 800 metre deep drop offs. Pemba’s smaller outlying islands offer endless white beaches dotted with palm trees.
This provides the perfect location for anyone looking to experience a true Tropical Island Fishing Adventure and offers some of the best Sport Fishing opportunities in East Africa
FISHING AT PEMBA ISLAND AND THE PEMBA CHANNEL
The nutrient rich, crystal clear, Indian Ocean waters drift up the Pemba Channel between mainland Tanzania and the west coast of Pemba Island, attracting large numbers of small fish and baitfish, which in turn attracts many migratory billfish and other pelagic big game fish species!
The big game fishing in the Pemba channel is as good as it gets! There are no less than 6 varieties of Billfish in the Pemba Channel, these include Black Marlin, Blue Marlin, Striped Marlin, Broadbill Swordfish, Sailfish and Spearfish.
In peak Marlin season, the billfish and tunas move right up to the Pemba coastline making Pemba very interesting for fishing enthusiasts.
Huge sharks, such as Mako, Tiger, Thresher and Hammerhead to name a few, are also present at Pemba Island.
Added to this, big game fish species such as Yellowfin Tuna, large Wahoo, King Mackerel, Dorado, Barracuda, Giant Trevally, Dogtooth Tuna plus many others abound in these waters.
Close to shore along the west coast of Pemba Island, immediately off Pemba’s beaches, there are regular catches of lesser Game Fish species include Rainbow Runners, Bonito, Skipjack, King Mackerel, Barracuda and Wahoo.
JUMP ON BOARD OUR FISHING CATAMARANS
We have a fleet of catamarans from 40ft to 60ft in length available for fishing charters in Tanzania and Pemba Island.
Typically, our Fishing Tanzania and Pemba Island liveaboard charters depart from Nungwi, on the northern tip of Zanzibar Island. Once we have raised anchor, we spend the day fishing our way up the Pemba Channel to the north. It is about a five or six hour sail from northern Zanzibar across the channel to Pemba Island.
Enroute enjoy delicious food and ice cold beverages whilst waiting for that big fish to strike or just relax and watch the dolphins play in our bow wave.
Once we arrive in Pemba we will fish until you drop, explore islands, snorkel, kayak or swim when you want a break, makes BBQs on the beaches or do as little or as much as you want.
Our Fishing Tanzania and Pemba Island fishing charters have no fixed itinerary and we keep things flexible to suit the guest’s wishes, their fishing goals and to maximise weather conditions at the time.

Of course, in between, the Game Fish are always there.
Fishing Tanzania and Pemba Island is nothing short of spectacular and is widely recognised as one of the most unspoilt fishing destinations in the world.
Billfish
There are no less than six different types of Billfish to be found in the waters of Zanzibar and the Pemba Channel which lies just northwest of Nungwi! Consequently, your chances of catching at least 3 different types in a season are really good. In peak Marlin season, the bill fish move right up to the coast line to gorge themselves on the Tuna. Consequently this makes the north of Zanzibar very interesting for enthusiastic anglers. These fish show inexhaustible displays of strength and a chance at a personal best is very good.
Striped Marlin, Black Marlin, Blue Marlin, Sailfish and Shortbill Spearfish are all caught here.
Broadbill Swordfish
Fishing for Broadbill Swordfish would generally entail a night fishing trip and because you will be fishing from a liveaboard yacht this makes for the ideal circumstances.
It is not unusual to have many strikes in a night although your fishing skills will determine how many of these powerful fish you can raise. Best times for Broadbill Swordfishing would be during the calm periods of March/April, Oct/November and the first 2 weeks of December.
Sharks
There are huge Sharks (Mako, Tiger, Thresher and Hammerhead to name but a few)
Game Fish
Yellowfin Tuna / Dogtooth Tuna / Dorado / Wahoo / Giant Trevally / King & Queen Mackerel / Barracuda / Bonito Tuna / Skipjack Tuna / Rainbow Runner provide endless hours of adrenalin filled Game Fishing action
